A total station looks like a large camera. It sits on a tall tripod. The camera instrument sends out an invisible laser beam across a site to the target. The target is a rod with a prism, called a pogo. A second archaeologist working on the project holds the pogo out on the site. The laser beam hits the prism and bounces back into the total station. A computer within the machine calculates the amount of time it takes for the beam to bounce back. It uses the difference in time to calculate the distance from the station to the rod.

The machine is so accurate that it can calculate angles and distance measurements down to the millimeter. The detailed map that the total station creates helps archaeologists plot where they find artifacts and the artifacts’ positions within the entire site.
